Post and Beam garages are a specific type of timber frame garage which use heavy main timbers. These form the skeleton of the building, each section is then clad with a choice of materials. The cladding can be anything from timber framework with cladding to brickwork. The most popular variation in the UK is to have an oak post and beam structure. Which is then clad with featheredge cladding to give the same look as a traditional barn. Our standard construction material is pressure treated spruce (softwood).

Which type of timber to choose for your frame garage

Spruce timber makes up the majority of timber constructions (timber frame houses etc) as it is a very consistent wood with fewer and smaller knots than pine. Knots in timber are where branches have formed leading to stresses in the timber and therefore warps, twists and distortions. However we also offer larch as an option which has many of the advantages of oak but is much more economic -

• Appearance: It has a great medium reddish-brown to light beautiful appearance.
• Easy to stain: Due to the light color, it can be stained easily.
• Rot Resistant: Moderately durable regarding decay resistance.
• Workability: Due to low density, it can be easily worked with hand tools and machines. Sometimes the work can be difficult due to the spiraled grain pattern and knots. But glues and finishes well.
• Small knots: Knots are common but are usually small.
• Insect Resistant: The larch wood has natural insect-resistant properties.
• Stability: Shrinkage in drying is fairly low.

Timber frame garages using the post and beam method are very quick to build on site. We pre-manufacture at a factory before delivery to site. Building on site just involves slotting the joints together (various methods are used for this). This means that the main frame can be finished within hours.
